Ueda celebrates birthday with one-shot win

Posted on

first_img“This feels great,” Ueda said after claiming her first win of the season with a four-day total of 7-under 281.“I have never missed so many short putts in a tournament and it was difficult to keep my composure. This is a great present to get on both my birthday and Father’s Day and I am going to enjoy the rest of the day,” added last year’s top earner on the Japan LPGA tour.Ueda was was making only her second appearance of the year in Japan after finishing tied for fifth in the season-opening Daikin Orchid Ladies in March.Oyama, the 2006 JLPGA money rankings winner, began the day with a two-stroke lead but allowed Ueda to pull level after a shaky front nine that included three bogeys.Oyama miscued an approach shot from the greenside rough and two-putted for bogey on the par-4 15th after Ueda had drained a birdie putt from 26 feet to move two shots clear. But the 31-year-old was punching the air with delight on the next hole when she birdied and reclaimed a share of the lead after Ueda missed a tap-in and bogeyed. Both players matched par on the 17th but Oyama missed a par-saving putt from three feet on the last before Ueda sank what turned out to be the winning putt.Ueda, who last year became the youngest ever JLPGA money title winner, earned a one-year exemption on the U.S. circuit by winning the 2007 Mizuno Classic, which was sanctioned by both the U.S. and Japan LPGA tours. USC Players Get Hugs from Fans During Return

first_imgColumbia, SC (WLTX) – The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team returned home Monday to a warm reception from fans, a day after a loss ended the greatest season in program history. The team plane touched down at Columbia Metropolitan Airport just after 12:30 p.m., carrying back Head Coach Dawn Staley and her team from their trip to the Final Four in Tampa.HEARTBREAK! Irish Edge USC to End Great SeasonThe several dozen fans formed a line as the players walked toward the hanger, and the crowd hugged the players and gave them high fives, saying “thank you” along the way.“I’m not surprised,” Staley said. “We’ve got the best fans in the country, and this is the reason why. Whether we win or lose they’re always with us to support us.”Team is obviously disappointed about coming so close to earning a spot in the national championship, but Staley says the player understand that this team has taken a great step forward this year.“When you look at some of our young players, they’ve grown up, they’ve got a year under their belts and i think they understand what it takes to get to that level, how hard you must work to get to that level but also know that we’re not that far off from winning the national championship if we continue to improve.”Despite Heartache, USC Had Best Year EverStaley says the team will take some time to absorb the loss, then get to back to work.“The sooner that we can get over feeling the way we’re feeling ,which is disappointed, it has to fuel you to get into the gym and see where we can create our edge for next year,” she said.A celebration for the team will take place Tuesday at 6;30 p.m. at Carolina Stadium prior to the USC vs. Appalachian State baseball game. Women’s basketball season ticket holders will be e-mailed a special offer to attend the ceremony. Parking for Tuesday’s baseball game is available in the Capital City Baseball Stadium parking lot and the Colonial Life Arena Lot B with shuttles to Carolina Stadium. The shuttles begin two hours prior to first pitch and cost $3. Parking near the baseball stadium is available for $5 or $10.##BR##last_img read more

Mississippi State announces football series with UMass

first_imgMississippi State and UMass will play at Gillette Stadium in 2016.Mississippi State and UMass will play at Gillette Stadium in 2016.STARKVILLE It’s not Davis Wade Stadium, but an NFL facility is a nice compromise. On Monday, Mississippi State announced a road matchup with UMass in 2016. It fills the fill the vacancy left by Tulane. The game between the Bulldogs and Minutemen will be played at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. It’s part of a three-game series between the two programs. The Minutemen will travel to Starkville on Sept. 23, 2017 and Oct. 17, 2020.Mississippi State will pay UMass a total of $700,000 in 2017 and 2020. The payout is $325,000 in 2017 and increases to $375,000 three years later. The buyout for either school is $1 million for each game remaining on the schedule at the time of cancellation.“Because of what happened with Tulane, we are a little concerned with the buyout portion,” Stricklin said. “We jacked that up a little bit.”Report: MSU fills 2016 schedule with trip to UMassThe trip up north completes Mississippi State’s 2016 schedule. Originally, MSU planned to play Tulane. The Green Wave canceled its game with the Bulldogs in late May.Tulane made $850K from cancelling with Mississippi StateThe move put Stricklin in a difficult position. There were only a handful of teams with openings in 2016. Stricklin hoped to find a seventh home game in 2016. Instead, MSU will have six games in Starkville and six away.“Ideally, we would have had a home FBS opponent,” Stricklin said. “But this late date made it a little problematic.”UMass was willing to travel to Starkville twice, however due to FBS scheduling requirements the Minutemen needed a home game in 2016.“This is a huge puzzle when you’re looking at needing home games in certain years, you need the date to work,” Stricklin said. “It’s way harder than it appears on the outside.”Conact Michael Bonner at mbonner@gannett.com.
